Our tour manager meets you at Colombo airport. Drive about 3 hours to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Kegalle, which has cared for orphaned elephants since 1975. You can feed and bathe the elephants and take photos. Stay the night at a Dambulla resort.

Start with the Dambulla cave temples, one of the best-preserved cave temple complexes on the island. Then visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a palace built on a 200-metre rock with gardens and water reservoirs around it. You'll also see the Sigiriya Museum and Pidurangala Rock with its reclining Buddha, and Minneriya National Park. Stay in Dambulla.

After breakfast, drive to Kandy, Sri Lanka's last royal capital. Visit the Temple of the Tooth, Kandy Lake, the Ceylon Tea Museum, Sri Lankathilake Rajamaha Viharaya and Udawatta Kele Sanctuary. In the evening there's a cultural show with drums and acrobatics. Stay in Kandy.

Visit the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, known for its orchids and tropical trees. Then head up to Nuwara Eliya, called "Little England" for its colonial buildings and tea plantations. See Seetha Amman Temple, Horton Plains National Park and the central market. Stay at a luxury hotel in Nuwara Eliya.

Drive about 5 hours to Colombo, with stops on the way such as St Mary's Church and the Dutch Canal. After check-in, tour the Fort area, Sea Street in Pettah, Cinnamon Gardens, Independence Square and the Avukana Buddha replica. If you want to shop, try ODEL or the Pettah Market for bargains.
